Why ain’t my lights on?

Hurricane Rita pictures

That’s always a big question after a storm. Well, here’s the Answer for Cameron, Louisiana. Cameron is the parish seat for Cameron Parish, the southwestern-most parish in Louisiana. It caught the full brunt of Hurricane Rita’s worst side, the northeast eye wall.

These pictures were taken by two of my technicians yesterday, two weeks after the storm.

Here’s the electrical substation that feeds the whole little town:

What a mess!

And here’s one of the 69,000 volt transmission lines that feeds the whole area. Note that the vertical poles are brand-stinkin’ new, installed by recovery crews. The old poles are leaned over. ‘Way over…

  1. Great pics of the damage. Up here in NJ (the place that got hit regularly in the ’30s, ’50s and ’60s) I’m waiting the BIG ONE that will sweep the barrier islands into the bay and beyond. Nothing to protect them. No dikes or levees and buildings right up to the dunes.
