Cha-ching!

Went to my site forty miles north this morning to do further investigations on the motor that we shut down due to high vibration earlier in the week. Opened it up. Looked inside. Brought a guy in from a company that deals with large motors. He and I agree. This motor’s gotta come out.

It weighs almost nineteen tons.

The people who designed the building in which it sits saved money on accessibility, so we have to remove a section of the roof to get it out.

We do have a spare, over a quarter of a million dollars of spare, sitting in the warehouse half a mile away. I’m going to do some electrical tests on it in the morning. I want to make sure it’s still in good shape before we commit to the swap.

And getting the two motors swapped out, that’s probably another couple of hundred thousand. And then there’s the repairs for the damaged motor.

The cause of the failure comes down to some heavy fiberglass baffles inside the motor that are held in place rather precariously by some quarter inch nylon screws. The screws broke, the baffles tried to go through a fan impeller, the impeller bent and tore, and that’s where the vibration came from.

There’s also a little damage to the electrical insulation, but not much. Getting the impeller changed, though, that’s not happening where the motor is right now.

I’m having a lot of fun dealing with the people who make the motor, too, just like always. I am mentally tired.

Today in History – May 9

1904 – The steam locomotive City of Truro becomes the first steam engine to exceed 100mph, probably the first ANYTHING man-made to exceed 100 mph carrying people… Well, in Europe, anyway. No. 999,of the Empire State Express In New York broke 112 mph in 1883, but that was “unofficial” because it was, you know, those smart-assed Americans with all their technology and stuff…

1933
– About 25,000 books, including at least one copy of the Bible, burned by the Nazis in Germany.

1941 – World War II: The German submarine U-110 is captured by the Royal Navy. On board is the latest Enigma cryptography machine which Allied cryptographers later use to break coded German messages. Allies can now read some of the German navy’s message traffic.

1950
– Robert Schuman presents his proposal on the creation of an organized Europe, which according to him was indispensable to the maintenance of peaceful relations. This proposal, known as the “Schuman declaration”, is considered by some people to be the beginning of the creation of what is now the European Union. Oddly, when Adolf Hitler proposed a Unified Europe a decade before, people got all up set.

1950 – L. Ron Hubbard’s Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health is released. Hubbard creates a “religion” from scratch and some people actually BELIEVE it.

1960
– The FDA announces it will approve birth control as an additional indication for Searle’s Enovid, making Enovid the world’s first approved oral contraceptive pill. This is the opening shot of the Sexual Revolution.

1980 – In Florida, Liberian-registered freighter MV Summit Venture collides with the Sunshine Skyway Bridge over Tampa Bay, making a 1,400-ft. section of the southbound span collapse. 35 people in six cars and a Greyhound bus fall 150 ft. into the water and die. Amazing…
