1535 – Following the Affair of the Placards, French Protestants are burned at the stake in front of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris. It’s not healthy to go against the state religion. Back then, that was Catholicism. Today, it’s socialism and global warming.

1774 – Abdul Hamid I became Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and Caliph of Islam. This was the same timeframe as American colonists were discussing separation of church and state.

1793 – After being found guilty of treason by the French Convention, Louis XVI of France was executed by the guillotine. The French Revolution is the textbook example of what you get when “enlightened” moonbats do a revolution.

1924 – Vladimir Lenin becomes a good communist dies; a lengthy power struggle emerges between Leon Trotsky and Joseph Stalin begins, culminating to the latter’s consolidation of power c. 1928 and Trotsky being assassinated in Mexico.

1941 – First commercial extraction of magnesium from seawater at Freeport, TX. This becomes a big deal because magnesium is a major component in aircraft.

1954 – The first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus, was launched in Groton, Connecticut.
